cookies that make sounds?

Cookies that make sounds?

Ciao Italy!! Cut, knead and roll to make pizza!

Ciao Italy!! Cut, knead and roll to make pizza!

Ciao! Mamma mia! Little Cookhouse took the children across the continents to learn about the flag, foods & icons of ITALY!

And there is no better way to learn about a country, than through food… that’s right, PIZZA! In the 3rd class of our 5-class series, our little chefs were reintroduced to knife skills (from lesson 1), plus learn about the skills of kneading and rolling. It’s probably one of the most tiring class for the little chefs.

But looking at the final product, the children’s efforts are certainly well rewarded!

What better way to get around the waters of Italy than being on a Gondola. The children made a paper gondola while waiting for their pizza to be baked in the oven.

To complete our journey to Italy, we learnt to play a pizza game. In this game, we took turns to spin the pizza wheel to determine which ingredient we had to put on our pizza. Each ingredient we put gets us some points. The game ends when someone spins PIZZA and we count all our points. The winner is the person who gets the most points. Aside from reinforcing the pizza theme, this little game helps the child to learn counting, and parents can ‘level up’ the counting skills required by increasing the points from single digit to double digit based on the mathematics standard of the child.

Rolling, cutting, colouring and playing with dough!

Rolling, cutting, colouring and playing with dough!

We successfully conducted 2 sugar cookies classes over the weekend, and it was a joy watching the happy faces of the little chefs eating their own creation.

This was not an easy class, particularly for the younger kids, as their fine motor skills are still being developed, plus the lack of such practice at home. Therefore, parents’ involvement became extremely crucial for this class, as the parents will have to guide their child in the rolling and cutting process. We are very proud of the parents who are willing to sacrifice speed and progress, to give their child the maximum exposure in creating their own cookies, instead of doing it on their behalf.

When we developed this class, we knew that there is probably insufficient time to teach the kids about measurement, hence, the dedicated focus on rolling and cutting. We also make the lessons age appropriate, by only introducing the technique to make rainbow cookies for older kids.

This strategy certainly works, as we see that our under 5 years old enjoying the cutting of the dough into different shapes the most. In contrast, the older kids were most wowed when the technique of mixing colours into their dough was introduced, as it allows them to use their colours knowledge to blend a colour of their choice. This is a good illustration of what age-appropriate activities can do to instill interests in children!
